| no partners | | It was a good thing I brought the snowshoes, as I wouldn't have made it if I didn't. As it was, the snow was pretty soft and it took me 4 hours to summit. I had to take the trail as there isn't enough snow for off trail hiking, and the snow was really bad in the area near the saddle. It's full winter on the Peaks, it just needs more snow. Snowbowl needs a lot more to open, and I think the only way they will be able to do so is if we get a big dump of heavy wet snow. So much of what is up there is blown around and rock, dirt, grass, and small trees are sticking up in the runs. Since it took me so long to summit, I walked down from the saddle to the runs and then continued down on them to my car. It wasn't really impressive, but then again it is only November 30. In past years we were still dry and usually a lot warmer than we have been this year, so maybe things will develop really well in the next few weeks. The clear winter visibility is back, and the best part of the view is east to the Little Colorado.
I would like to do the Dutchman route, but we need more snow to be able to do that, so if we don't get it I may do this route again in a week, or two. Hopefully snow won't be an issue for the Solstice, but I could just take the trail to the top to overnight if it isn't going to be too windy.
I wouldn't normally have posted photos for this, but with the snow and interest in ski conditions I thought it might be nice. Plus, some are pretty nice, I think. |
