Brian was off with a friend looking at some limestone and I chose to do this hike. Initially it looked like a 3 mile loop on Topo, but I ran into some private land issues ( having not checked the forest map prior to this hike) and had to widen my loop to involve some not interesting wide wash and road hiking.
The canyon is low and brushy with a little stream. Then it goes through a weird and attractive brick red layer which is crumbly up on the banks but hardened and chunky along the stream bed proper. Lots of big old sycamores and oaks down in the main wash. The final part of the original loop the canyon is deepening with some nice waterfalls but I was unable to complete it as in full view of a ranch house nicely situated on the bluffs. The waterfall wasn't that technical but the traverse would take some time and I didn't feel like incurring the ranchers' wrath. So I backed up and retreated to the wide wash, hiking along, water all gone away, then scrambled up a steep slope to a seldom used dirt 4wd road, and a long boring walk back to the car. I've disguised the name of the canyon, the really interesting part is short and the most spectacular part is of course on private land. |
