| no partners | | Too soon, I tell myself, too soon to go back. An extra day off came my way unexpectedly. It was like an umbilical cord pulling me there. I parked in a different spot, pack loaded with more water, no sleep pad or bag, some food, a stove, the one luxury. A pair of thermals and the cameras. Walking a different stretch of the barren moonscape. This time more canyons, more colors, more fabulous geology. Walking on massive mudstone blocks of sea floor, made of crushed shells, and some sandstone bedding intermixed with the volcanic. Some narrows and walls rising, instead of the wide open. A little canyoneering, finding more hardware from the mock battles, clambering up small hills on the tilted old sea bed floor. Spring is coming here, the pleasure of a few flowers and the light wind at night as I huddled in my soft mud, sand bed. All I need is here. |
