We had been planning this one for the past couple of months. Decided to get the family out on the trail for an early season fishing trip. This was definitely not the best trip for beginners, but it's an excellent destination trip with plenty to see and do.
We left early Friday morning @ 6am to get an early start for the weekend. Stopped in Payson @ the Knotty Pine Cafe for breakfast before hitting the trail. After arriving at the trail head, we split up the rest of the food and gear and made sure we had everything we needed. This was the first backpacking trip for 5 of our 8 and all had be warned of how tough this trip really is. Shortly after starting the climb everyone realized what they were in for. After 4.5 hours we all safely arrived to camp on the south side of the lake. The wind was ripping all weekend long and definitely made for some tough hiking and fishing conditions.
There is a lot of water on the rim from the latest storm and the snow is still really deep @ Knoll Lake. Most of the lake is ice free and the rest should be in the next week or so with the current outlook on temperatures.
I think we were a bit too early for the spawn but the fish are definitely hungry. We pulled out 4 decent rainbows while fishing Saturday but went ahead and released them for another time. Didn't get a chance to practice with my fly rod with the wind but there is always the next trip.
Overall it was a great trip, even with the windy and cold conditions.
This was my first time leading a group of 8 and cooking for more than 2-3 people. It was a great learning experience and even with the rough and tough trail, fun was had by all. Like all of my Rim trips, we followed up our trip with lunch at Cardo's Pizza before heading home. Definitely thinking about hitting this up again in the next couple of weeks.
