Laurent Martres in his photo quidebook describes this place as having a certain majesty. Very true. I took some pics but I think past efforts are much better. I retraced and car camped in a nice area of bentonite hills on BLM land. Nearby canyon looks interesting. Next day drove to the visitor center for Capitol Reef, got my free backcountry permit for Halls creek, decided to hike Pleasant Creek at the end of the scenic drive. I hiked upstream rather than through the waterpocket fold. Pleasant Creek is an apt description. Found some old inscriptions, evidence of power poles in the past, and a dugout in the sandstone erosions. Pretty warm; nice hike and pleased to the non crowds--no one else hiking here this day. |
