It was cold and windy and snowed for five minutes as I saddled up at the TH near the airstrip. The weather improved as I hiked. Old mine cabin ( appears 60's or later), a tunnel, some workings. Almost all the mines here are uranium though. The walls rise and are nicely colored and have intriguing detail. You'll get wet feet, but it is easy hiking. Next day after a cold windy nite, hiked up on top via the Knotted Rope chute, named for an old knotted rope which you used to handline it up the chute under an overhanging choke stone. The rope is gone of course but plenty of good handholds. You just follow along near the rim for some miles, at the top of Miner's Hollow again interesting mining remains with no road remaining for access. Bringing up things from the mine below must've required a heck of a winch, some hints at it but no real remains. Nice views, clouds, and able to see Muddy Creek and the airstrip from above. A great place to sit to have lunch, chill out, etc.
Probably one of my favorite areas in the Swell. |
