| no partners | | Needed to do a quick hike, near home, so I could get over to my Dad's for a Father's Day visit. Figured since North Mountain was in my AO, I would try a loop up its backside. Left home, walking, at 5:20 a.m. Got to the trailhead at the southern end of the 7th St. split at 5:30 and the small lot was already jammed, with a line waiting to get in. Joined the parade heading up the paved trail/road, but split off after about 200 feet AEG, onto to Trail 101, around the north edge of the mountain, to the inner bowl. I've been through that area more times then I could count, mostly on my mountain bike. Once I reached the bowl, stayed left, tight to North Mountain's western ridge. If you take any of several splits west, you will end up going up Shaw Butte's southern slope on Trail 306, or one of its off shoots. I passed by the earthen dam and chain link fence, then turned east up Trail 60. Passed by my planned route up the backside, looked at GPS, doubled back, and discovered my planned route was signed off. Shazbot. I don't mind going off trail, but I won't ignore a "do not enter" sign. It's not polite. So, I kept heading south on Trail 60, hoping to find an alternate to my alternate route. No such luck, though I did find some old mines that are not marked on the topo. Was running close on time, so called wife, then bailed to Sunnyslope Elementary for evac. Looking at Google satellite view again as I type this, and can see that I passed by several possible alternates that were not immediately obvious on the ground. I shall return! |
