The loop after you leave Deer Camp (going clockwise) is much more rugged- faint with cairns and orange flagging over large slabs of granite. It is part of the Samaniego Peak West Ridge route, but I couldn't really see a path heading up the ridge beyond where it left the loop because it was overgrown. I closed the loop and was in the mood to keep hiking so I checked out the Middle Gate/50 Year Trail loop as well. Middle Gate goes through some fantastic boulder fields that I hadn't traveled through before. I love the junipers on the 50 Year trail (or anywhere else for that matter, it's my favorite tree!). Often there is a saguaro right next to a juniper as low as 3200 feet. This hike made for an enjoyable figure 8 loop through some really beautiful country. |
