| no partners | | What a fantastic night in Sabino! The Tucson Hiking Meetup group was a mob scene so some of us made our own small group and it really paid off in terms of critter sightings. Went looking for badgers, got rained on, saw a diamondback and a tiger rattlesnake. We saw a skunk go off the side of the road and went to investigate. When we were looking at the skunk, realized that Phillip was standing almost on top of another tiger rattler. That was a close one! Went a bit past the two mile mark to the big wall and the creek crossing (sadly dry) and went looking for scorpions with blacklights. Found tons of scorpions of all sizes and a mom scorpion carrying its babies on her back. Learned a very fun trick: shooting pictures of bugs through a magnifying glass.
We saw a bunch of cars driving the road, one of them with a AZ Game and Fish sign on it, and the people said they were in town for a herpetology conference. About 15 minutes later, two sheriff cars and a forest ranger car with their lights on stopped and asked us if we'd seen cars on the road. I wish I knew the story of what happened, we saw the cops drive back a short time later. On the way back, we saw a wolf spider with babies on it's back (must be the season). And then to top it off...a Gila Monster! I hadn't seen one all year and this one put on quite a show. It puffed itself up while walking away, then turned back to face us and made hissing noises, opening it's mouth wide. A couple of tarantulas on the way out and one final loop to look for badgers to top off an amazing evening of sightings. |
