Wendy and I were planning an uber-early start of 5am for a hike on the Alamo Springs loop in the Tortolitas for today. The night before, we found out that the fire closures in the Catalina district had been lifted and had to change our plans to a hike where we could take the floaties. We got hiking around 6:30 am and as we were going down the switchbacks to the bottom of the canyon, I spotted a curled-up diamondback right on the trail. The sides of the trail were covered in cactus and other nasty plants, limiting our options. It was early and the snake was barely awake, so we snuck by before it knew what was going on. Definitely got the heart beating a bit. It wasn't looking too promising for a swim, the canyon was as dry as I've seen it in a long time. The dry conditions made travel much easier than usual.

Wendy did a great job of describing the water slowly making its way down the canyon, it was pretty incredible to watch. I was pretty relieved to see that our pool wasn't stagnant and that the waterfall was flowing good and strong. After some quality floatie time, we made our way back and found an alternate route that goes up and around "the maneuver". It felt so good to know that our hiking options have opened up again.
