| no partners | | A buddy and I started talking about a hike and wanted something that involved water with optional swimming. We poured over some maps and chose West Clear Creek starting off FR 142E. We left Saturday morning and made our way to the trailhead. We drove in his high clearance SUV but it appeared passenger cars would be fine reaching this trailhead as long as the roads were dry.
We gathered our gear and started making our way down the trail into the canyon. The descent is very steep and slow going. We took our time and eventually reached the creek. Our plan was to head up canyon for some exploration and relaxation! We quickly stepped into the water and found it liberating not having to worry about getting wet. We explored the first side canyon that opens up into an enormous room. Someday I want to camp here. From there we continued up canyon.
Working our way up canyon involved roughly 50% wading through the creek and 50% on some form of a trail. It was very slow going but we were in no rush. We checked out numerous campsites for future reference. One of them had a half filled bottle of Southern Comfort. It looked really appetizing so we both took a swallow. Thanks to whoever left this!
After a couple of hours we stopped for lunch and then decided to head back. We found ourselves back at the exit in no time so we decided to head down canyon. Right away we found the "weeping wall". We continued on for a bit and then decided to head back. The climb out was slow and steady and we were back at the car in no time. This is definitely one area I must return! Go in the summer when the swimming is good! |
