Our group left the museum around 8am and took the trail for Spruce Tree House to Spruce Canyon Trail where we hopped a little fence and walked into the very bottom of Navajo Canyon. From there, we ascended Wikiup Canyon to the top of Long Mesa, where we dropped along the west side to a lookout point to view the dwelling (see topo maps for pack trail). The site hasn't been excavated, so we were not allowed to enter. I think I enjoyed the views on the way to the site more than the site itself. There's just something about being at the bottom of those canyons.
Every now and then we would stop and hear about the plants and various sites around us. There were numerous granaries nestled into the cliff faces. Some of which seem pretty inaccessible. Getting to Spring House was a really light scramble. I think there were two ladders, maybe 6ft. We spent about 15-20 minutes discussing the dwelling before starting back to the museum. Climbing back up to Long Mesa was a blast. I wish it lasted longer. Once we got back to Spruce Canyon Trail everyone kind of dispersed at their own pace. |
