This was an incredible day for a variety of reasons. We walked right into the center of a heard of Elk. The heard split to the north and south of the trail and, as a result of the split, we had the heard with us for at least 3 miles of travel. We saw at least six very majestic bulls, many females and numerous "kids". It rained lightly on and off, later that turned to soft snow and then finally gropple (as they call it in Salt Lake City). The moist trails were holding fresh tracks well and we were able to identify elk, deer and black bear tracks. We also found what might have been racoon, ringtail or badger prints (and scat), plus what we think are mountain lion tracks.
The day was rich with sights, sounds and a variety of weather. A great day indeed. And a wonderful reminder of the outdoor glory that Arizona has for all of us.
Trail note: I found this section to be smoother and less difficult than the 8 mile section west of Geronimo. The streams were clear and running well. |
