I decided to pull an all-nighter, leaving my house at 2am to meet up with the gang going up to do Passage #27 of the AZ Trail.

We met up with Bob who camped at the Pine TH, at O dark 30. From there we drove up on the Rim Road to set up the Shuttle at the General Spring Camp area. The Elk were everywhere up on the rim, including numerous huge Bulls.

Back down at the Pine TH we started the hike serenaded by a leprechaun with a Harmonica.

The area had received a lot of rain the night before, so the trail quickly became part of our shoes. The slickness of the earth made climbing slopes a bit more difficult. The vegetation was green and lush for most of the hike and views of the valley below was accented with banks eerie looking fog.
We went through a section that made you think you were in Sedona.
I know Jim_H doesn't think to highly of weathermen, and after this day, I agree.... they were way off on this day too. They said a 60% change of thunderstorms starting at 11am, we got 100% thunderstorms for 1-1/2 hours starting at 11:02. Man do they suck at forecasting.

The trails were rivers and there was no chance at trying to keep the feet dry anymore. Past the Geronimo TH and the clackers, and off to the Washington Park TH. After a short discussion as to which way the trail went, we started the slog up the hill to our destination at the General Spring Cabin. On the way you pass the headwaters of the Verde River. Somewhere real close to the trail, this river must gush out of the Rim. Denny and myself decided to take a side trip to the tunnel which I thought was pretty cool and was glad I made the extra .75 mile trip to. It was a green, humid, tough, wet, dirty, muddy, sweaty, hike. I loved it!

Thanks Denny for driving all the way up there and to Bob for helping with the shuttle. It was great to finally meet Denny and to see Bob and Dave again. Oh yea Joe was there too. Denny, I hope that the smell of wet hiker did not permeate the fabric on your car seats too badly. I've been told it's harder to get rid of than a wet dog smell.
