Back in the 90s, you were allowed to openly walk up to water at La Jolla Cave and swim with the seals, which I did back then. There were few seals, and it seemed like me and my friend were the only ones doing this. In 2009, the seals grew in population and the crowds followed. They added fencing and a rail and restricted swimming and areas where the seals hang out. Also, the area became mephitic from the seal feces. There were discussions about killing off the seals or scaring them away due to the stentch. Now, I heard that they totally blocked it off, and you cannot walk down the cove, so I'm glad that I was able to go down there when I could. It was so pretty, even if it smelled like a seal sewer.
