| no partners | | Tons of people in the park today. Passed at least 20 (literally) on the first section of Mesquite. Along the north/south section of GC and MQ, I was treated with some dramatic clouds. They were hanging out pretty low, so none of the higher peaks were visible. Much like last week's trip to 4018, I was headed into the abyss once I was on the Jeep trail. There were two people in a truck who were doing some road work on the service road. I thought my trip would be cut short just below the peak, but I figured I had nothing to lose if I "asked permission." They gave me the OK, and I decided I wouldn't take too long up top. No views today, but I think being up with the clouds makes up for it. Had some lunch as I walked the last bit of GC and the beginning of MQ. This section has the best views on any White Tank trail, in my opinion. Even better when you're the only one up there.
I just happened to take my eyes off of the ground a short ways down Mesquite and saw 5 deer grazing about. They were really close to me, and right along trail. I inched my way closer, but they kept moving. As they climbed over a ridge, I looped around the trail to meet them on the other side for some more photo ops. I tried to do the same thing as they went over another hill, but after 5-10 minutes of waiting, I figured they went elsewhere. Further down the trail, I ran into another heard of 5. These guys were in much more of a hurry, and the encounter lasted a minute tops. Definitely the highlight(s) of the trip. |
