THIS TRIP I SPENT AN EXTENDED TIME AT PANTOM RANCH DOING SEVERAL DAY TRIPS AND GETTING TO KNOW THE INNER CANYONS QUITE WELL. THE TRIP TO RIBBON FALLS MEANDERS ALONG THE BRIGHT ANGEL CREEK WHICH HAS HAD WATER IN IT EVERYTIME I HAVE BEEN THERE, BEAUTIFUL CLEAR, CLEAN WATER-QUITE A DIFFERENCE FROM THE MUDDY COLORADO. THE TRAIL RUNS TO THE NORTH OUT OF PHANTOM RANCH AND CRISS CROSSES THE BRIGHT ANGEL ON FOUR INTERESTING BRIDGES THROUGH INNER CANYON NARROWS GAINING ABOUT 1000 FT OVER THE SIX MILES. AT THAT POINT YOU HAVE A CHOICE-A SHORT CUT WHICH REQUIRES CROSSING THE BRIGHT ANGEL CREEK OR CONTINUE ON THE TRAIL FOR A HEARTBREAKING CLIMB OF ABOUT 400 FT, COME DOWN THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HILL AND THERE IS A BRIDGE CROSSING THE BRIGHT ANGEL MARKED WITH A SIGN TO RIBBON FALLS. EACH TIME I WAS THERE WAS TOO MUCH WATER AND CURRENT TO RISK CROSSING THE CREEK SO I OPTED FOR THE HILL AND BRIDGE. AS YOU ENTER THE BOX CANYON IT REQUIRES A LITTLE SCRAMBING TO GET IN THERE BUT NO ROUTE FINDING SKILLS ARE NECESSARY AS THERE OPTIONAL BUT WELL WORN TRAILS. THEY SAY A QUALITY PICTURE OF THE FALLS IS HARD TO GET, AND I AGREE. THE SHADOWS AND BRILLIANT SUN ANGLING IN TEND TO RUIN THE PICTURE WITH A POINT AND SHOOT CAMERA........BUT THIS YEAR I GOT A GOOD PICTURE, A KEEPER. HAD LUCH THEN AFTER THE RETURN TREK UP THAT HILL AGAIN THE TRAIL BACK TO PHANTOM IS A BREEZE, SLIGHTLY DOWNHILL AND WITHIN VIEW ALMOST THE WHOLE TIME IS A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE BRIGHT ANGEL TRAIL UP TO THE SOUTH RIM LOOMING IN THE DISTANCE ALMOST A MILE ABOVE.
