| partners | | We had a total of 11 hikers today. We did this hike in the opposite direction then in the description. We'd only been going a few minutes when I heard somethhing large moving in the brush. I stopped and saw black and told everyone there was a bear! What a great way to start a hike!
The Vault Mine trail was as steep usual. We took a snack break at the saddle before climbing up the ridge to the road. I always enjoy people's faces when we climb off the route and join the road as it seems so unexpected. We completed the climb up to the top and would have enjoyed the view except it was pretty hazy with all the smoke.
We then started down but paused to have lunch like civilized people at the picnic tables. Yet another surprise for those who haven't done this hike before is the coke machine and the toilets with running water. We had a nice cool lunch andthen continued our way down.
The next fun for the newbies is when we have descended the road a ways and then we stop at a switchback and look up towards Mt Wrightson. They always wonder what is next and then you go around the guardrail and quickly descend on the route. It just seems impossible from the road. Then comes the steep dwnhill which doesn't stop until you get to the Carrie Nation Mine trail. At that point i always feel like I never want to see downhill again. The return to the car from there isn't as steep but it's sill downhill.
Not only did we see a bear but we also saw 4 squirrels. Not used to so much wildlife in one day!
After the hike we figured we were done way too early in the day so we headed to Allegros for gelato and espresso! After that we were treated to the rain! Fabulous day! |
