FR9489P is very rocky and I didn't want to risk popping a tire or two, so I parked the truck 1/10 of a mile in and walked the road. Just past the cattle gate the road drops steeply down for about 250 yards then splits. What road to take--9489P or 9489V?
I started off by choosing P, walking the road for about a mile, then taking off into the woods toward the canyon on an old, closed track. I found a hunting blind by following some orange flagging tape. On my way back to the road I crossed paths with a gopher snake. He was about 4.5 feet long and very dark in color. By the time I got the camera out of the backpack he had made it into a juniper tree, so my pictures aren't that great.
I went back to the Y, and started up 9489V. After about 1/2 mile, I came to a new fence with a new gate. This one was too tight for me to open! As the clouds were building, I decided to call it quits for now. I headed back, made the steep climb up the hill and back to the truck. Next time, I'm going down the ravine at the Y. This is supposed to deadend at a 200' dropoff into Walnut Canyon. |
