I chose this one today searching for aspen photos. I took the first turn onto FR 151 with a detour onto a secondary road into a large grove that was golden. I think this was the peak weekend for aspen-peeping and there was alot of traffic on 151.

The parking area at the Bismarck Lake trailhead was almost full when I arrived. Up the trail a bit I ran into a camo'ed hunter who told me that the Peaks has a special elk hunt now thru next Thursday to reduce the elk herd (male and female) to try to save the aspen groves.

There was alot of hikers today and mountain bikers. I took the AZ trail to the right at the junction to get to one of my favorite aspen groves. Now, the AZ trail goes right through it. The trees did't disappoint today. I tried to make a video of the leaves floating down, but couldn't manage to make it work on my new camera (d600). I guess I'll have to resort to reading the manual....

On the way home I finally stopped to take some pictures of the sunflowers. Just a few patches remain in bloom around Flagstaff. This group is by Big 5 and Hwy 89A. This is the first time I've seen Monarch butterflies in Flagstaff--there were 2 of them feeding on the sunflowers.

This was a perfect hiking day and photo day. Perfect temperatures and just a bit of wind. Days like this get me through the work week. Next weekend I'm at Out of Africa for a photo seminar.
