The interesting part was that it involved a bit of hiking and climbing to look for a cliff dwelling near the Verde. I had never hiked in the area so off we went to Camp Verde and the junction of salt mine road and Chasm creek. We parked there and headed down the jeep road towards the Verde. After a pleasant walk we arrived at the Verde canyon overlook. EVen with mud in the river it is very impressive and the recent rain made it very green. We looked at many options from the top. Nothing interesting so it was down to the river for some more searching along the high walls that line the river. Eventually success was ours and a three story cliff dwelling was located and photographed. The dwelling is very well preserved and perfectly located near a couple of huge fields which would have fed a lot of people worthy of the dwelling size.
We hiked back out along Chasm creek and climbed a couple of times to check out its caves. After a lot of boulder hopping we found a way back to the top and connected with the jeep road in.
My ruin hunting friend was in heaven and I got in a good day hiking and climbing. |
