The plan was to explore along the south rim of the North Fork Devils Chasm to get some views into this seldom visited canyon. I hoped to find some new (to me) cliff dwellings in the cliffs on the north side of the canyon using my super zoom camera to check out all visible alcoves and caves. Of particular interest was confirming the location of the NF Devils Chasm cliff dwellings reported in Lange's "Echoes in the Canyons ...". We would also get some great views of the upper part of the SF Devils Chasm by crossing over to the south side of the ridge that separates the two. The morning started out cold with waking up to a dusting of snow (more like #7 shot gun shell bee bee sized hail) in camp. The hike started at the Moody Point TH on the road to Aztec Peak, proceeded down Moody Pt Trail #140 to the Rim Trail #139 where we took a left following it past the upper end of the SF Devils Chasm. After going NE a little over 0.5 miles on the Rim Trail we started off trail going east on the ridge top between the NF and SF Devils Chasm. Our planning track plotted on Google Earth helped us avoid thickets of manzanita but we did encounter some bush whacking through the stuff to get to view points along the rim.

We got some great views of the middle to upper ends of both the NF and SF Devils Chasm. Both are very rugged with vertical cliff walls along the sides and forests of rock hoodoos sticking up here and there. We didn't have much luck at finding ruins but the views were amazing. Reviewing my super zoom pictures back at home I thought I'd made a major ruin find but couldn't determine the location of the photos. Further study revealed it was ruin V:1:162 which is a long ways from Devils Chasm - sometimes the super zoom just zooms a little too far. Those photos are not in the photo set with this triplog. [-(
