Sounds scary.
First up on the hike was locating the Chasm Benchmark and its three associated Chasm disks.
Easy easy.
I then took a stroll down a ridge toward the Verde River, to confirm something I saw on Google Earth. I had never seen anything like it before.
Some animals showed up and helped me confirm what I thought.
Lastly, I wandered perpendicular to and crossed, a few chasms, in hopes of locating what looked like a small ruin or lookout on GE. The object is overlooking the Verde River.
I almost named this hike "Chasm-Chasm Everywhere", since they held me up, and had me back tracking many times. Even when I found a way to get down the 25 foot drops, I had to make sure I could get up the other side.
I patted myself on the back when I actually found and used, a zillion-year-old road on the other side of a chasm, all to go 100 feet down that road and get "chasm thwarted" again.
The very short bridge that crossed the chasm is history.
I never got to that 'possible' ruin. I was running out of my allotted time for the hike, plus the last chasm defeated me.
I looked down at that last abyss, gave it a salute and a smile, then turned around.
To get back to my TH, I knew I had to re-cross all those chasms I already made friends with.
Ironic historical note
Joe and the Eagle did a hike 10 years ago, and used the same 'unofficial' trailhead that I used on this hike.
Also, ironically, one chasm I crossed a couple times, was a chasm they actually used as part of their hike track.
Plus, it appears they were 'Stopped-In-Their-Tracks' like I was, by that long gone bridge over a chasm.
And to think, I thought I was the only person in the world that Ever hiked in this area - NOT—
All in all, it was a fun and enlightening hike. Chasms included. |
