| partners | | Hadn't been up here since June 2011, so I was overdue for a visit. I played a hunch and asked some hiking friends if they had ever been to the Sierra Anchas. When they said no, but had been wanting to go for a long time, I told them they were in for a treat! We met by the Wal Mart in Claypool and I drove them up. Since this was their first trip to see the falls, I suggested we hike up to it along the creek from the Falls CG, about half mile downstream. This would make it more dramatic for them instead of just driving up and looking at it from above. I hadn't done that in about 8 years, but I knew it was going to be a bit tedious going over and around many downed trees, rocks, and brush. Most of it wasn't too bad, but in the last few hundred yards near the falls it was a real logjam of debris and thick vegetation. Every visit is a little different, as things get rearranged by big runoff events. There is definitely more deadfall to contend with since the Coon Creek Fire of 2000. Still, the walk along the stream is pretty in spots and the reward of finally breaking out and seeing the falls towering above you makes it worth the effort!
After spending some time under the waterfall taking pictures and getting chilled by the increasing afternoon wind blowing spray all around, it was exit stage left up the scree pile on the north side to the base of the rock wall and on up to the road. Walked to road back down to the campground, then drove on up toward Aztec Peak. |
