Wow, was this fun  . Huge waves, big rocks, people flying out of boats. Everyone stayed safe with no serious injuries. Just a darn good time on some wild rapids.
Dean and I signed up for the 2 Day Reverse raft trip. 14 foot boats, 23 miles, 70+ rapids, and, of course, the Big 6 Class V+ rapids.
First day, was down the wild and scenic Lower Gauley. Several long stretches of smooth flat water gave us plenty of time to enjoy the West Virginia scenery. Plenty of time to relax, before hitting some big drops and huge waves. The Lower Gauley may not get as much respect as the Upper, but the big hits do not disappoint. Our boat did a better job staying in control than most of the others (6 boats in our group). At least one rapid ended up tossing a full boat (guide included). Ace Adventures did an excellent job at making sure we all had a good time. Fun guides, a great lunch, a warm fire during the lunch break, wet suit rentals, great photography and videography, and a cooler full of beer to enjoy for the bus ride back to the property.
The table was set for an even wilder ride on day 2. This is the Upper Gauley and this is no relaxing scenic float. We had to paddle...we had to paddle a lot. Listening to our guides call-outs paid off with a killer big hit on Pillow Rock and a couple of fun rock spins, plus some great lines on some big drops and boat drenching waves. Pillow Rock was my favorite hit. We dropped about 8 feet, flew up on a huge wave and slid the boat about 8 feet high up on to Pillow Rock before sliding back into the water and dropping down the rapids backwards. We lost one passenger in our efforts  , but were able to get him back in the boat about 50 yards downstream.  If riding wild rapids on an untamed river sounds like your idea of a good time, then this is your river. Don't miss it. |

| This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee. |
