Anna and I drove two vehicles out to the Salt River to set up a shuttle for a kayak trip down the Salt. We left the house before 6am and had boats on the water by 7.

We were the only paddlers launching from the recreation area by the bridge. I was hoping to see some of the wild horses I always hear about. Anna and I definitely got our fill. We came across 5 different groups of horses for a total of about 18-20 horses total. The first grouping was the best. The horses were in the water crossing the river. We could see them from far off in the distance. As we got closer, it appeared a mare and her foal would remain on the south bank. Nope! Mama started to cross in front of me and I was only 100 feet away. As my kayak glided forward, I snapped pictures like mad. At one point, I started backpaddling to avoid a side impact collision with the horses. The last photo I took was from about 10 feet away. I just missed the horses as I glided behind them. Had they not been in water, the mother could have kicked me, I was so close.

We came across plenty of blue heron, a coyote, vultures, ducks, tube floating fishermen. It was a beautiful day on the Salt, and everyone (wildlife included) seemed to be enjoying the calm river.
