Still tyring to keep in training for my GC hike coming up in 3 weeks, oops I guess it's only two weeks now. Fri nite I injured my rightus gluteus maximus while trying to avoid slipping on a towel during Strength class so I was worried we may have to alter our hike plans. However, I guess it got warmed up enough that it didn't really cause me too much difficulty.

Ambika decided she needed to get out on a hike and while I offered her a Plan B :wrt: (since she hadn't been hiking since Sept) she decided to do this STEEP route with me. Per trekkingekko's recommendation we hiked it from the FH side. We met at the parking lot off of Golden Eagle Blvd in Fountain Hills around 7:45AM. By the way, the facilities there are quite nice so the $2 you pay as you get to the TH doesn't seem too bad.

The hike in the desert as you walk on the Dixie Mine Trail is really quite nice with lots of varied desert scenery. Our first encounter was with a bunny rabbit who froze standing up so that we could take all the pics and video we wanted. It was the strangest thing :-k .

Once you get to the intersection with the Mine and head south, the real work begins but it is only a precursor to the STEEP part of the hike that doesn't necessarily look THAT steep until.... you start up it :o . Oh I knew it was steep as I had read the trip reports and EVERYONE said it was STEEP. However, I liked that it was paved so at least you didn't have to worry about slipping. I liked that it had a point where it leveled out long enough for you to check out the views into the city and such.

That last 1/2 mile is not so bad either as like Ambika, I don't mind those short little switchbacks, even as STEEP as they were cuz they were short. I was so happy :y: to get to the top as finally, this big old mountain couldn't intimidate me every morning that I drove to work. So there! We took a couple photos and then headed around to the east side with views of the Fountain spurting and of course the Supes where I would much rather be.

And of course, on the way back the McDowells delivered their usual heat for us to endure. The hike to and from Dixie Mine, however, is very nice and worth a trip back; Thompson Peak, not so much; Oh and did I mention it was STEEP.

We cleaned up at the Golden Eagle facilities and then drove into Fountain Hills to see if we could get a quick bite to eat. Well we ended up downtown at Sofritas across from where the carnival was going on. This was a good choice as we enjoyed tapas (mini tacos and bruschetta sandwiches) as well as a pineapple sangria and an apple cider sangria.

Here is the video of that STEEP  hike: http://youtu.be/xBjRIvHLcRU?hd=1

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
