Nate learned the art of route finding via the cairns. I helped him rock hop across the first creek. Then he wanted no more help and did it himself. As we dropped down to the fence / Mazatzal sign, I could tell Tom was getting tired. Nate was getting excited about the Lower Racetrack Mesa. I convinced Nate to skip the Racetrack Mesa this trip and to bushwhack to the Verde instead. We followed an open wash right to the Verde. Tom and I ate as Nate threw rocks in the Verde. We then went to the honey comb rapids and Nate threw some more rocks.
On the way back we saw something shiny object in the distance. With Tom's binoculars, it looked like a hot water tank. I sprinted over to see what it was and it would up being a half buried aluminum canoe!
With Nate's new route finding skills, he led the way back. He ran the last 1/4 mile back to the Sheep Bridge. |
