| no partners | | I started out at the Cross-F TH and headed down FR393. At the Upper Alder Creek crossing I went up the creek looking for the Upper Alder spring. I went right past it and went up the creek till it started to close up and become very rocky. I had crossed over the Mazatzal wilderness boundary. I came back down and found the spring (according to the GPS). I continued on a spur road that took me up higher to a flat area with a corral, tank and a couple of springs. After a couple of miles the spur returned me back to FR393.
As the road dropped, I saw big patches of yellow on the mountains. At first I thought it was some rust/mining debris, and then realized it was wild flowers!
There are a lot of neat areas to check-out along the road. The scenery is amazing! The road crosses Alder creek for a second time. There were a lot of green trees down in the creek. Alder creek eventually hits the lake after this crossing. The creek looked mild enough to be an easy hike to the lake. I might do this another hike.
After you cross from the Sunflower district into the Bartlett Lake District, the scenery changes from mountainous to desert. The road also changes from a constant drop to rolling hills.
I went down a wash to the lake and had lunch there. Then I returned to the road and came about a mile from the dam. I was about an hour past me turnaround time, so started the march back. I saw an un-coiled ratter on the way back. I only saw three people on the road the entire day.
It looks like the road is 17~18 miles one way. Goggle Earth showed that one of washes heads back to the Bee-line somewhere by Mesquite wash / Sycamore wash.
It was a typical Arizona spring weather. Cold in the morning extra warm at lunch and cool in the evening. |
