Got to the Canyon and it was socked in, lots of snow and fog, headed east to Grandview and Lipan and got some nice shots in brief openings thru the clouds. Saturday morning was more of the same, but they closed East Drive and Hermits roads as the overnight snow was deep. About 2PM the clouds parted so I I went to Mather and then to Bright Angel, parked and hiked out to Maricopa, hoping that the sunset would burst thru the layers. There was a bit of pink, but nothing dramatic. As I was hiking back in the dark, the plow passed, so I knew I could drive in in the morning. Got a few shots of hikers ascending Bright Angel, then I went to the tunnel for some shots. Nice hot shower at the hotel very nice after hours in ~20 degree + 30mph winds. Sun morning brought me back to Maricopa, a few beams made it thru the clouds, then lit up the canyon later in the morning. Went out to other western points for nice shots of west canyon. East Rim was still closed, so I headed to Flag, and then West Fork... |
