Friday October 19th, I headed south along the Turquoise Trail scenic byway (NM14). This skirts the east side of the Sandia Mountains and lets you bypass Albuquerque. Along the way you pass through three towns noted for their mineral wealth: Cerrillos (turquoise), Madrid (coal), and Golden (gold). These days there are lots of artist shops present, especially in Madrid. Crossing I-40 at Tijeras, I continued south on NM337 and NM55 on my way to my lodging stop for night four, the Rock Motel in Mountainair. On my way, I made the always pleasant Tajique-Torreon side trip to check out the maple display. It wasn't as impressive this year, but still a winner. (I posted those photos earlier). Saturday the 20th saw me head over to catch I-25 then southbound, with a stop at San Antonio (NM) to get some more chiles roasted at Sichler's. Instead of taking the Hatch cutoff to Deming, I headed west to Silver City on NM152, one of my favorite drives in the state! This takes you through a couple more old mining towns, Hillsboro (gold) and Kingston (silver) on the way to Emory Pass in the Black Range. From Silver City it was a scenic drive to Lordsburg, where I picked up I-10 for the home stretch. It was a wonderful trip that combined new discoveries with old favorites! |
