Paved part of the way on either end with good unpaved in the middle. Once I reached Cuba the rest of the trip would be on roads I had already traveled. From Cuba I headed a few miles north on US550 before turning off on NM96. Drove NM96 to Abiquiu Reservoir where it intersects with US84. This is the heart of Georgia O'Keeffe county, where the famed artist spent many years at nearby Ghost Ranch. I arrived at Abiquiu Reservoir as darkness set in. From there it was down US84 through Espanola and on to Santa Fe to my room for the night at the Silver Saddle Motel. I found out on an earlier trip to Santa Fe in August, that if you arrive late on a weekday with no big events happening, you won't find many places left open for food after about 9 PM. So, I just hit Taco Bell and took that to my room. Perfect. What a day it had been! Made the entire journey after breakfast at Denny's in Bernalillo (helped along of course with Budweiser and snacks). Yep, it was another typical Randy day on the road.
Whenever I get up around Abiquiu it evokes strong emotions. Memories of many trips up to Chama to ride the steam train come back into focus. Nearby Echo Amphitheater is a wonderful spot I have camped at. Carson NF used to have a wildlife rehabilitation unit near Ghost Ranch that I stopped at with my mom back in 1993. The entire drive along US84 from Santa Fe to Chama is a delight. Highly recommended if you haven't done it.
The route I took this time had me on the south and north side of the San Pedro Parks Wilderness. I hope to get back up there to camp and hike next summer, as friends have told me there are excellent trails at high elevation. |
