| no partners | | Well after the initial Sunday plan became a no go, I set out to look for something nice and easy to do without involving too much effort as I wanted to stay relaxed today. So with this area in mind and with a recent outing from kingsnake I was motivated to hit this hike up. As I parked by the side of the road and gathered everything and set off I was shaking my head at how cold it was at 10am. The cold however couldn't cancel target practice day and the barrage of gunfire I was hearing just made me laugh as usual. The trail is a little faint in the beginning and middle sections, but pretty easy to follow on up to the top of this peak. Surprised at how few summit triplogs are written at top I tried to see the familiar names in the fragile notebook. Kingsnake was last one up and I was able to see some expected names as well in the log but was surprised to not see one name in particular. I was able to spot where target practice was coming from, enjoyed the view of the rugged peaks in the distance as well as the lake view which never gets old. I decided to head back down and then cross Castle Springs Road, drop into the wash near where I was parked, and take the wash to the southern ridge of Cholla Mt. then head on up to the top of this short peak. The wash provided a much more narrow section than anticipated with a nice loose scree climb out. I know now why Cholla Mt. got its name as keeping your eyes straight for more than 30 seconds would cause you to end up in one of those pleasant cacti. Once on top I enjoyed the view of Lake Pleasant and to no surprise didn't see any boats on the water. Only a few names in the summit log which was expected, after a few minutes of enjoying the view I decided to head back down as it was too chilly to stay in one place for too long. On the way back down I came across a pair of some good size antlers and stopped for a photo op. Got back to the Jeep and was happy with the hike today, cannot beat that. |
