| partners | | ok, i was nervous about this trip even before i heard the chilly weather forcast. i had never been to an actual cross-country skiing trail. i had only been on bigelow road up in the catalinas, where the snow is much softer. and yes, that was what worried me: falling on hard snow. AND, having much more people witness your wipeout was also a concern. well, the trails go much faster than the backcountry type of skiing that i had done before - it was more even, too, so really there was less chance of falling. but, did i mention that it was really pumpkin cold? when you're in the catalinas, it could be just 45 minutes later that you could be experiencing much better (warmer) weather at 2700 feet of elevation from the 8500 feet of mount bigelow. overall, the experience was pretty cool (pun intended). it was nice to have options about where to go and have longer and more elevation trails to go on if you like. this was southpawaz's first adventure in xcountry skiing and we went pretty far for a first timer (on the schultz and the abineau trail loops). i'll have to wait and see if he succumbs to my one snow sport inclination. we were going to go again today, but the frigid weather kept us away. |
