Nearly every step, it seemed, was an adventure due to vast mud bogs and climbing with mud caked shoes, quite the kick! We thought it was really cool that we started this hike in the clouds and continued in this fashion for most of the the way up to the Point until we realized that this completely obscured our views of the Kalalau Valley below! Ugh! Slow going, really slow, thirty minute miles, but all with good caution. An elderly gent with an British accent hiked with us a while, smartly planting his poles, singing "mud, glorious mud!" and exhorting us on to "plant the flag" at the Point. Well the point of this experience was to get the views, those fantastic views, would the sun cooperate? As we finally reached Pihea Point lo and behold by magic the clouds parted and we were treated to those awesome views! Fantastic. All told we only fell once each on this crazy day, no harm done but to our pride. Great hike. |
