| no partners | | Hike 2 of 3 on my one-day tour of Waimea Canyon. This one starts at Pu'u O Kila lookout at the end of the road. The first section of the trail has impressive views down into Kalalau Valley and the coast line, 4,000 feet below. Once you reach the Pihea Vista lookout, the trail then descends towards the Alkalai swamp. Much of the trail from there on is supported by a boardwalk to help keep you out of the muck. It was beautiful, but got a little monotonous. after a couple of miles, I reached a trail junction, with the options of extending another two miles to a cool lookout over Hanalei on the north shore, but the time trade off (and the monotony of the swamp views) persuaded me to return to the trailhead to squeeze one more hike in on the day. |
