| no partners | | Sunrise Peak - McDowell Mountain Preserve. Over and Back. My Garmin showed 10.1 miles and 2,316 accumulated elevation gain.
The West side and the East Side are really quite different hikes. The West 1) has more expansive views; 2) is longer and 3) not as steep until the final .25 to the Summit. The East is 1) shorter, 2) more confined up a canyon and 3) steeper with more scree.
I started from the TH at the north end of 124th St. Not a real TH, just a few parking places. I went to the Summit and kept going down the other side. My timing was perfect and I got to see the Fountain (see photos). The East TH at the end of Via Linda is very nice with water and even a special water faucet for pets. Turned around and came back but by-passed the Summit on the way back. Even though it was a Tuesday mid-morning there were 18 hikers, 2 dogs and one bike on the West side and a dozen hikers on the East side. Much busier than I expected. |
