| partners | | Hail to the Chief. Mt Antero is named after an Indian chief. You guessed it Chief Antero. I had a picture of said Chief that I was gonna lug up the road but I left it in the hotel room. I wanted to do a different route but Nick loves hiking roads so that’s what we did.
The hike starts on a road. There’s a road in the middle and a road to almost the end. Then there is a little rock hopping to the summit.
After puking my guts out yesterday, I wasn’t sure how today would go. I had the pumpkin scared out of me as a vehicle was driving by. I’d meet up with them later. Just follow the road and keep following it until it changes to another road and follow that one. At the saddle, there are some signs and the same picture of Antero that I left in the room. It also explains how this is the highest mineral grounds in North America and that in 2004 a big aquamarine rock was found here. There are some mining claims and miners with guns although I didn’t see any.
Nick was descending the peak when I saw him for the first time in a while. He said it was freezing up on the summit. I was on the peak about 10 minutes later and the sun came out and it was t-shirt weather. Enjoyed my summit brew and lunch in complete solitude and shortly after that about 4 miles later I caught up to Nick and we hiked together for a little while. Shortly after he finally cracked open his summit beer, a vehicle pulled up to us and offered us a ride. Nick decided to walk and I jumped in the backseat and relaxed. At one point, I jumped out of the car to move a big rock out of the road.
Back at the truck, my head was throbbing again but this time I survived the onslaught of upheaval. High Mountain Pizza and craft brews were a great way to finish off the day. We found a good place and stuck to it. This time we added hot wings. Books and websites stats for this route are 16 miles and 5,200ft of AEG. Nicks stats were 15.3 and 4,963ft of AEG. My stats are about 12 miles and 4,963ft of AEG. |
