Several other vehicles drove to parking at 12,000 feet and one Tacoma went all the way to a saddle at 13,800 feet. It was Sunday and there were plenty of people there and also ATVs. Antero is one of the few 14ers that lends itself to that kind of traffic.
We reached the summit without any trouble on a beautiful day. The mountains and clouds cooperated so we had a great time. After the hike Sun_Hiker and her husband Bud and their labs Boris and Jupiter had Hank and me over to their place for dinner and a birthday party complete with a birthday carrot cake with candles (only not 68 of them - didn't want to start a forest fire). What a glorious day.
I did my first 14er on July 6, 2005 at the age of 62 years 10 months and 2 weeks. After that I have hiked 14ers 28 times on 22 different 14ers and that includes two more on Tuesday (Shavano) and Thursday (Elbert via Black Cloud) following this hike. We have some in HAZ who have done them all but they are a bit younger. |
