But the trail is one of the steepest, rockiest and in places hairiest among city parks. I can understand why the City rates this hike a 5 on a difficulty of 6. Still, having reached the summit several times before, I knew a nice reward awaited. An unobstructed view in all directions. Unlike Shaw Butte and North Mountain just to the SW, Lookout sets alone at an el of 2,054' and yields a sense of freedom, providing you can overlook the surrounding clutter of homes on all sides. And you're likely to have the small, flat summit to yourself. It was 6 o'clock when I started up, only an hour before sunset. I reached the saddle in 12 minutes and clambered up the steeper last segment in another 8-10. Alone on top, I drew a circle in my notebook representing the 360-degree view and jotted down a few of the many mountians I could see and their direction from the circle. Vulture Pk was 300 degrees and Thompson Pk 65. I started back down after 20 minutes alone at the top as another beautiful Arizona sunset was taking place, reaching the TH shortly after 7. Again, this strenuous hike was worth it. |
