| no partners | | Gave myself only an hour and a half to reach the Dreamy Draw Nature Trail from the 40th St TH in Phoenix Mtns Preserve. Took the high trail SW on an unmarked contour trail, then at a point I called the Red Dirt Mine, I shot downhill along a faint path to meet up with the #100. Gambel's quail everywhere. It's mating season, and I wondered if their loud single note "ka-ow" is a male's call for a partner. I read they pair off in March and are monogamous during the breeding season that can last into July. The most interesting part started at the highest point on the trail, coming down into a gap that leads into Dreamy Draw. This was a lonely shadowed segment and the only one where a small field or two of wildflowers, mainly poppies, grew. At a little after 6 I topped a pimple of a hill overlooking 51 Highway, waited a few minutes before turning back. I could see the parking lot to the NNW but it was too far away to flirt with darkness. I know. I hike mostly evenings, often returning to the TH in darkness, and I need to take a torch of some kind. Anyway I picked up some distance and have gained strength and improved cardio in the last week. |
