The northern approach is like having a bad first date and you never forget it no matter how much things improve later. I remember hating this trail the first time I tried it several years ago. The beginning is not only steep but it's an eyesore of a service road with a ton of loose rock and broken asphalt, not to mention herds of hikers and joggers. In other words, mental agony.
But somehow I persevered and actually got to the the summit from the North Mountain Park V.C. in a good mood. The reward was another terrific sunset from the towers where three wild and crazy guys leaned out over Phoenix from the rocky south ledge and bellowed "aarh" to the wind like Stallone did on the city steps in the original "Rocky." It was particularly nice coming down, a pleasant evening, my taxes done for another year and the prospects of a good meal ahead. |
