| no partners | | After hiking down in the Sabino area the day before, I headed up the Santa Cantalina Highway and camped up at Spencer Canyon before heading out this morning to hit this cool hike. Boy was that a fun drive in a convertible with good handling. It's much nicer up here in the Summer months. I parked at the Mt. Lemmon TH and did most of this loop, but I ended up continuing on Wilderness of Rocks and heading up Aspen trail back to the TH. Up Apsen looked to be an easier ascent and adds only about a mile to the loop. Another mile is added because I headed a half mile down the trail and I remembered that I forgot to display my parking pass. The temps had also increased so I dropped my jacket also. After I returned from backtracking to the TH, I headed down the Lemmon Rock trail a bit and checked out the views from the Lookout. The fire damage on the Mt. Lemmon trail wasn't too bad, but it looked much worse on the Aspen trail and there weren't any aspens on this southern facing ridge. Saw some on the drive down on the north side though. The views of the Cantalinas, Tucson, and the thousands of granite boulders are just amazing. I did suffer from some altitude sickness in the form of fatigue, wasn't expecting that at the 8000-9000ft range. Hiked a little slow in some sections and took a couple cat naps along the way. I even spent the night up here at 8000ft to get acclimated. Now I'm a little concerned for when I hike up in Flagstaff next week. |
