A trip to pick some apples up at the old Peterson Place along the Abbey's Way Trail above Workman Creek Falls. I have visited that area many times over the years and really like it. Between 2000 and 2006, there were apples on the trees in even numbered years with none in the odd numbered years. Very interesting! I haven't been up there as much in the last several years, but I have noticed that the trees aren't bearing as much. Also the rate of their demise seems to be accelerating, perhaps due to old age and unfavorable conditions. Anyway, I drove hiking friends Ralf Deason and Alice and Jack Olson up from Tucson for a nice day trip. :D

2006 was one of the years when the road remained closed all season because of damage up by the falls, so we parked at the Falls Campground and hiked up the road. Instead of going in on the main trail, we followed a long abandoned road that heads to the meadow along the north fork of the creek. I wanted to show them a cluster of large old Rose bushes located along the road near the perennial stream. They were loaded with rose hips! Must have been a sight to see in the spring when they were in bloom. :) We gathered apples, then before heading back down stopped over by a nice sitting rock to enjoy some snacks and a bottle of wine. Kind of one of my traditions up there. Passing by the waterfall is always fun and a part of what makes this such a beautiful area. :) On the drive back to Globe I sometimes like to stop at the Diversion Dam picnic area and walk out in the river. The cascading water feels real good on the feet! Thus ended another fine day in the Anchas! :y:
