| no partners | | I started doing some hiking with one of my coworkers at the National Weather Service in Tucson in the mid 1980's, and suggested a trip up the Apache Trail and then on up to Workman Creek in the Sierra Ancha Mountains. I had not been there since 1970, and figured a car camp there would be something Ken P. would like. It turned out to be a great adventure. Camping on Aztec Peak was perfect! I set up my small tent and he slept in the back of my truck. Thankfully, the tarp we brought came in handy, as there was a heavy dew and it kept his sleeping bag mostly dry. We drank mostly bottled beer on that trip and we used a vintage opener my Mom had given me to pop the tops. After we got back home and I was cleaning out the truck and getting things ready for the next trip, I couldn't find the opener and figured I might have left it on Aztec Peak. So, I enlisted my Mom to accompany me on a wild goose chase back up there the next week to try and find it. Crazy stuff. We never found it, but Mom finally got to go to Aztec Peak. (I can't even remember what was so special about that thing after all these years, but it did provide Mom with a long wild day out of Phoenix! ) Her reaction to this trip was the reason I decided to make it her final resting place years later: [ triplog ]
Note: Date of this trip is a guess, as I scanned the photos in and have nothing definitive. Should be close though. |
