| no partners | | Nice hike to beat the heat. With thunderstorms in the area it was either the Chiricahuas, Huachucas or Mt Graham. I drove up with no real destination in mind, parked and decided to walk down Grant Creek aways, take some pics, etc. Wore the worst shoe/sock combination ever with my feet slipping and sliding on the rocks and inside the shoes!
This is a really nice hike IMO. You have water, lush vegetation, a pretty good use/animal trail and the upper part is not technical. There are some nice little waterfalls and pools. Where it breaks out and becomes mostly granite and dives toward the desert floor does take a little work to go down but you can do so a short distance before it becomes technical. The granite is quite slippery and in this area you do need to be careful, esp if solo.
Coming out I decided to hike above the creek to avoid one cascade area and found an animal highway, lots of scat. I backtracked to an incredible overlook of the granite box area of Grant Creek falling away. What a campsite it would make.
Getting back to the car was short work, with dark clouds and booming overhead. Drove on up a little then walked around in the gentle rain, enjoying the coolness. It's not monsoon yet I guess, but the first rain of the season always seems special. |
