Walk on old road with great views in the cool of the evening--check. Drive a road out on the map we figured might be a good staging area for other things---check. Drive down Cherry Creek road off Board Saddle and go up one of the big walled canyons we look casually at ---check.
No name on the map but a pretty impressive big walled canyon. Water lower down and nice bench walking near the watercourse. Soon some big boulders in the wash and some rock hopping and grapevine tripping and swinging. Noted some small PVC pipe in the wash then found two grower lay up sites, no recent use. Didn't find the grow site although lots of smallish clearings with interestingly arranged rocks. On up the canyon got more serious in boulder size and vegetation. Some maples but still green. My feet got sore and I had Brian go on while I stayed with Charlie, the dog. It was cool to cold in the shade and wonderful in the sun. Sometimes the canopy allowed us glimpses of the cliff faces. Brian saw a bear in a tree but I didn't loan him a camera so no pic. Coming back we found an alcove with lots of bear scat near by and scuffed up places where he/she layed down. Out of one of the camps was a well used trail heading up. We followed it a bit but it was very steep and seemed animal maintained now.
Beautiful canyon, another great weekend in an area that keeps on giving. |
