Great trip, lots of beautiful clouds and some evening storms, beautiful glacial lakes and above treeline in part. West Fork of the Black River is easy hiking in an amazing emerald green meadowlands with the namesake creek flowing pretty much down the middle. You rise as you get to Dead Horse Lake. The pass is pretty impressive the switchbacked trail rising 1000 feet through the talus, has some sketchy parts in the upper due to being routed through loose shale and dirt. The ridgeline of the Uintas here is impressive. Over into the alpine bowls of the head of Fall and Rock creeks. Phinney lake was a nice campsite and I went down the trail to the reported great swim holes and falls on the Fall Creek trail. Very nice in an unusual setting. Back up and over into the Head of Rock creek, where I wanted to be above treeline so took off from the trail to see a few of the little lakes and whatnot. Having strained my Achilles tendon the second day and barely able to fit my foot in my boot, cut back on some of my planned mileage and contented myself with laying on my back in the meadows and watching the huge puffy clouds build and sail by at times. Camped at Continent lake, where I observed two people catch sizable fish on their first cast. I was told this is the best fishing lake in the Uinta's at this time.
Then they left and I had the lake to myself, as you camp without tree cover here. I stupidly did not go back to the trail and ascended through some unstable and steep talus to Dead Horse pass. Sunnier weather on my trek back down the pass, better pictures. Camped early near wonderful Buck pasture and just walked up and down the creek a bit. Saw some moose in the distance then they faded quickly into the trees. Lots of dead trees along the North Slope West Fork, winter kill and bark beetle??? Out the next day--- even enjoyed the drives up and back with some wonderful car camping right out of Zion national park on the BLM land with some epic views and a little red slot canyon.
Have had 3 great trips to the Winds and now 3 great trips to the Uintas. |
