Drove to this canyon after doing some web research, a major birding area apparently; it sounded really nice. Disappointed to see the ranch gate locked, but with a walk thru and a sign proclaiming no trapping, off roading or hunting. You are right at the border fence here so it's a little weird to park, put on a pack, and walk the road. It is a very nice riparian area, with some absolutely huge cottonwoods and sycamores in here. Spring or seep fed water in spots. A client told me somewhere in this area was an old adobe which was full of Apache arrows. I found an old adobe but didn't see any evidence of being shot up.
This canyon has a rather famous smugglers' history with it's continuation into Mexico. Supposedly "Old man Clanton" was killed in a gunfight in here. It is some times referred to as Skeleton canyon, which is confusing because that is north of here.
I got off the road and walked in the canyon bottom as much as I could. Lots of birds in here, I saw a few but heard a lot more, the canopy alive with calls. I went up Baker canyon until I got tired of it then scrambled out to go overland and go down Guadalupe to prevent it from being a total in and out on a road. Lots of catclaw, and me in shorts. I did see some trash here and there but overall the area was clean and did not show much traffic.
The canyon bottoms are lush right now with greenery and flowers. It was a bit hot on the trip back to the car but the Toyota was right where I left it and all in one piece. Next time I think I will access via Sycamore canyon.

Now, onward on the Geronimo Trail----
