| no partners | | While on a trip to New Mexico I heard that NM 152 between Kingston and San Lorenzo had been reopened, as the Silver Fire had marched north and was out in the initial burn area. So I altered my trip back home to check it out. I had been over at Alamogordo to watch the fireworks show at the Space Museum with cindyl & southpawaz (sort of a tradition for me; 9 of the last 16 years). I stopped at the little campground at Kingston to brew up a cup of coffee and have a snack before heading into the fire zone. What I saw going over the pass was not as bad as I expected near the highway, but it was obvious that things burned much hotter up on the peaks and ridges, as you would expect. The facilities at the campgrounds and traiheads seemed undamaged, though everything except the road through and Emory Pass Vista was closed. Recent thunderstorms had dumped a lot of rain in the area, so the fire was pretty well knocked down. There were no smoke plumes noted to the north and just a general haze in the air.
